FIFA Women's World Cup 2019™

Spain

Spain - Cyprus Cup Winner

FIFA Women’s World Cup record

France 2019 will be Spain’s second appearance at the world finals. La Roja made their competition debut at Canada 2015, where they lost two games and drew one in a disappointing campaign that saw them finish last in a group that also contained Brazil, Korea Republic and Costa Rica.

The road to France

Spain sealed their place at France 2019 with a match to spare, after posting seven consecutive victories to top European zone qualifying Group 7 ahead of their closest challengers Austria and Finland. They ended the campaign with eight wins from eight, having scored 25 goals and conceded just two.

The coach

Jorge Vilda took over as Spain coach in the wake of their Canada 2015 exit. Having enjoyed success with the national women’s youth teams, Vilda embarked on a process of renewal, bringing in some new faces and making some tactical changes. His revamp has paid off so far, with his side qualifying comfortably for UEFA Women’s EURO 2017, where they went out to Austria in the last eight, and winning the Algarve Cup that year and the Cyprus Cup in 2018.

The stat

9 - The impressive number of assists provided by Jennifer Hermoso during Spain's qualifying campaign for France 2019. Hermoso is also her side’s joint top goalscorer with seven goals.
