Haiti celebrate qualifying for Brazil 2019
  • Four Concacaf nations win through to 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup
  • Haiti and Canada qualify for Brazil 2019 with penalty shoot-out wins
  • USA and Mexico advance with comfortable victories

USA, Canada and Mexico all won passage to Brazil 2019, but it was Haiti who headlined the action by qualifying for just their second FIFA U-17 World Cup at the expense of Honduras.

Carl Fred Sainte put the Haitians ahead on 65 minutes following a goalmouth scramble, with Hector Medrano equalising ten minutes later with a header.

A largely unremarkable extra time period left qualification to be determined from the penalty spot. The decisive moment came as Andre Orellana thumped the final penalty against the crossbar, leaving Haiti 4-3 victors in the shoot-out and heading for their first U-17 World Cup since 2007.

Mexico ease through to world stage

Matters were far less tense for two-time U-17 world champions Mexico who progressed into their sixth consecutive tournament with a 5-1 win over El Salvador.

Mexico were 3-0 up at the interval and the contest was effectively over within minutes of the restart as Israel Luna completed his double.

Brazil 2019 will be El Tri’s 13th U-17 World Cup having won at Peru 2005 and again on home soil six years later.

Canucks end six-year drought

Canada played out 120 minutes with Costa Rica, finishing all square at 1-1 after Jayden Nelson and Geancarlo Castro exchanged goals either side of the half-time break. The pair couldn't be separated after that, with spot-kicks needed to settle the encounter.

Jody Hernandez saw Los Ticos get off to a poor start and, while Jacun Russell-Rowe's saved effort gave them hope, Jordy Evan's effort that cannoned off the bar handed Gianfranco Facchineri the chance to steer Canada into their first U-17 World Cup since 2013. Having seen off Curacao 4-0 in the last 16, Canada find themselves in the semi-finals on the quest of a first U-17 title.

Brazil 2019 will be Canada's seventh trip to the finals, having hosted the second-ever edition in 1987.

USA back again

It was a decidedly more comfortable afternoon's work for former Swiss international and USA coach Raphael Wicky against Panama. While level at the break, the United States struck nine minutes into the second half through Gianluca Busio's cool finish and never looked back.

Captain Gio Reyna - son of former senior side skipper and centurion Claudio - tucked home a penalty eight minutes later to take real control of the quarter-final, notching up his fifth of the tournament in the process.

The icing on the cake came with 15 minutes to go when Ricardo Pepi tripped the Panamanian offside trap and fired home to see USA book their 17th participation in the U-17 World Cup, having missed just one edition in the tournament's history.
