Back on 11 June 2005, Argentina kicked off their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign with defeat to United States in Enschede. Yet, arguably the biggest surprise that summer’s evening in the Netherlands was not the result, but Lionel Messi starting the game on the substitute’s bench.
The Rosario-born forward, picked out beforehand as the tournament’s player to watch, did make an entrance in the second period, injecting such impetus into Francisco Ferraro’s team that come their next game three days later versus Egypt, he earned a starting berth. He did not disappoint: on that 14 June – also in Enschede – La Pulga scored his first goal for La Albiceleste in a FIFA competition, netting the opener in a 2-0 win that helped kickstart their run towards the title.
That strike came exactly ten years ago today, so we have decided to pay tribute to the Barcelona superstar with a ranking of his ten best goals at FIFA competitions. Do you agree with the order? Take a look at the video and enjoy the pick of the Argentinian’s artistry!
