Football fever was unavoidable in Germany as it geared up to host the 18th FIFA World Cup™ – as the above shot of the entrance to Cologne Central Station shows!

It was decorated by a gigantic 800-square-metre poster of, among others, Michael Ballack (Germany), David Beckham (England), Kaka (Brazil), Shunsuke Nakamura (Japan), Raul (Spain), Juan Roman Riquelme (Argentina) and Zinedine Zidane (France).

Cologne hosted five matches during Germany 2006, including England’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Sweden and Ukraine’s penalty-shootout victory over Switzerland in the Round of 16, while an adopted son of the city, Poland-born Lukas Podolski, became the inaugural winner of the tournament’s Best Young Player award ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
