Everton-Liverpool is traditionally referred to as ‘The Friendly Derby’, a consequence of so many Merseyside households having supporters of both clubs, and the above picture certainly underscores that moniker.
It is of Kenny Dalglish and Bob Latchford, the respective spearheads of the Reds and the Toffees, having a laugh as they blow bubble gum ahead of the Merseyside derby in October 1980.
It proved to be an exciting one, with goals from Sammy Lee and Dalglish cancelling out efforts from Joe McBride and Asa Hartford in a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park.
The latest Merseyside Derby was also an exhilarating stalemate, with two goals in the first eight minutes, a sublime Luis Suarez free-kick, a late Romelu Lukaku double and a last-gasp equaliser from Daniel Sturridge to see it end three apiece.
The rivals will reconvene at Anfield on Tuesday. Dalglish, a non-executive director at Liverpool, and Latchford are sure to have a keen eye on proceedings, but which of them will have a smile on their face at full time?
