One man ducking under an overhand left punch, another twisting his body to avoid a crunching elbow and boots flying all over the place… it could have been a scene from the WWE’s Royal Rumble!

Instead, it’s one from a Round of 16 match between the Netherlands and Yugoslavia at the 1998 FIFA World Cup France™.

Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar managed to punch clear a corner, but his fist almost followed through and caught team-mate Phillip Cocu, while Slavisa Jokanovic is close to giving Jaap Stam a shiner! With other players ducking to avoid high boots, it’s a chaotic scene.

It was nevertheless just a brief ugly moment from a handsome game, which was won 2-1 by the Netherlands thanks to Edgar Davids’ superb last-gasp strike from distance.
