Which players will star as coaches?

The best players don't always make the best coaches. Pele, Eusebio and George Best never tried their luck, while Bobby Charlton, Francisco Gento and Mario Kempes endured forgettable spells in the hot-seat.

However, some legends of the pitch, such as Tele Santana, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff and Carlos Bianchi, did excel from the dugout. By contrast, the likes of Luiz Felipe Scolari and Arsene Wenger have enjoyed significantly more fortune giving orders rather than taking them.

It's not easy to predict what a philosophies a player will take into management. Take Rinus Michels. The Dutchman was a forward who compensated for technical inferiority with bravery and endeavour, and who favoured the long-ball game. After hanging up his boots he became a tactical revolutionary, pioneering pass-and-move football.

George Graham is another case in point, a gifted yet lazy flair player whose success at the Arsenal helm was based on a defensive, industrious unit.
