CONCACAF quartet set for Korea Republic

Costa Rica footballers celebrate during their U-20 Concacaf qualifying football match

Mexico, Honduras, USA and Costa Rica have secured the four available CONCACAF tickets for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017.

Mexico were the first team on Wednesday to qualify thanks to a comprehensive 6-1 win over El Salvador. Bouncing back from a 1-0 opening defeat against USA in some style, Mexico's one-sided scoreline was highlighted by a treble from midfielder Uriel Antuna. *El Tri *went ahead on the quarter-hour mark, and a 4-0 half-time margin meant the match was effectively over as a contest by the midway point.

USA joined them from Group D thanks to back-to back victories, seeing off El Salvador 2-1 - which included a thumping half-volleyed strike from Eryk Williamson - to go with their victory over Mexico, booking their place in the continental final.

There they will meet Honduras, who collected a 2-1 comeback win over tournament hosts Costa Rica. Honduras turned around the deficit with Foslyn Grant heading home the all-important winner midway through the second half to see them claim six points from their two matches.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, had to endure a nervier passage to the global finals, earning a 1-1 draw with Panama to edge their way on to the plane thanks to a superior goal difference.

They join 16 teams from Asia, Europe and South America who had already booked their place prior to the CONCACAF U-20 Championship’s kick-off, with all four semi-finalists earning a place in Korea Republic. The other four places will be made up from participants at the CAF Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, which is also on-going.

The Official Draw for the U-20 World Cup will take place on 15 March.
