The hosts' Esperanza Pizarro ultimately claimed the honour for her spectacular top-corner strike against Finland, with second and third place taken by Spain's Irene Lopez and Ghana's Mukarama Abdulai respectively.
Pizarro won 36.6 per cent of all the votes, putting her ahead of Lopez (23.4 per cent) and Abdulai (15.6 per cent) in the race for the tournament's top strike.
"On the goal I remember it was a loose ball," Pizarro told FIFA.com. "First, Valentina Morales put pressure on a rival, then Belen Aquino did the same and she picked up a loose ball.
"A Finland defender who was on the floor tried to poke the ball away from me, but she just missed it. I remember where I was standing. I turned around and shot it.
"Winning the goal of the tournament makes me happy—happy for doing a bit more to add to the history for Uruguay, for giving joy to my team-mates and the Uruguay people."
