Comfortable at defensive midfield or centre-back, Rubin Kazan’s Ruslan Kambolov was included in Russia’s preliminary squad largely thanks to his versatility. When his club has been faced with shortages in central defence, he has happily filled in.

He started out at his native Alania Vladikavkaz but moved aged 14 to Lokomotiv Moscow, where head coach Rinat Bilyaletdinov marked him out as one for the future. A few years in the second tier followed before Kambolov re-joined Bilyaletdinov at Rubin Kazan, but this time he did not lose his spot in the line-up after the coach's departure.

He made his debut for Russia during a friendly against Kazakhstan in March 2015. Now he has a second crack at nailing down a place in defence.
